A TikToker has called out a restaurant after someone spotted that the suggested tips on a receipt didn't add up.

It's no secret that tipping has become a hot topic in recent months, as it spreads outside of the more common circumstance of a restaurant.

Many people are finding themselves being asked to tip in a growing number of scenarios, including for Doordash, cafes, and even groceries.

But one person has taken the practice back to the place where tipping is most commonly expected - when dining out in a restaurant.

When you're out and about you may have noticed that many establishments now have an option where you can select a percentage tip which is pre-calculated.

This can save time when it comes to figuring out exactly how much 20 percent of your bill is, or however much you plan on tipping.

But one TikToker has pointed out that you may want to just double check the numbers on that before selecting an option.

But why would this be necessary?

You've probably come across these screens before.

It's because some instances have come up where the amount on the bill and the percentage don't actually match up.

TikToker @kentsports showed an instance for a bill of $20 where the receipt contained suggest tips which had been pre-calculated in a video on social media.

These started at 15 percent, before going up to 18 then 20 percent.

Here's the issue, the 15 percent was listed as $5.02, the 18 percent at $6.02, and the 20 percent as $6.69.

Anyone who is good at maths will already know that 20 percent of $20 is actually $4.00, whereas $6.69 is 20 percent of $33.45.

The TikToker said: “This is tough, because I love the suggested tip. When you’re signing a check, that is the greatest gift anyone can give you.

The TikToker pointed out the discrepancy.

"But it appears restaurants are now lying about what percentage to put under the tip."

Nonetheless, he did add that for him it wouldn't matter, saying in the caption: "I'm always going to fall for this but whatever I'd rather over tip than under tip at restaurants."

However, some people pointed out that there could have been other factors which explained why the tip was higher than it should have been.

For example, the meal could have been discounted because of a special offer or coupon, and the tip amount was calculated before the discount.

Nonetheless, it's probably still worth double checking when you're out just to be absolutely sure.
