Nobody truly knows what happens after we die. Perhaps we ascend into heaven or fall into hell, maybe we're doomed to roam the world as ghosts ad infinitum, or get reincarnated as another person or even an animal, or maybe it'll all just turn to black.

For centuries, people have shared their beliefs and tales of the afterlife, with some alleging their whole life flashed before their eyes, while out-of-body experiences close to the point of death aren't anything new. However, this man says he managed to go all the way to hell and back.

In a new TikTok from @outterdarkness, a doctor recounts a story of a young man aged around 22 or 23 who'd been stabbed in the heart after a drug deal went bad.

At the time, the doctor was working in the emergency room, and he saw the man with his chest cracked open.

However, the other doctor working on him refused to let him go 'without a fight', so they transported him to surgery and pumped him full of blood.

Amazingly, they managed to get a pulse and tie up the hole in his heart.

'After about four hours, he woke up, looked me in the eye and grabbed me, and started crying and sobbing, and said [he] met the devil,' the doctor recalls.

'I saw you working on me, I was dead, I'd never prayed,' the man said. '[He said] he went straight down into hell and looked straight in the eyes of the devil.'

At this point, the man started praying - something he'd never done, because he wasn't religious - and an angel reached down and pulled him back up.

The doctor continued: 'It was the most amazing experience because he was legit, I mean nobody makes up an experience like that.

'The last I heard, he's completely changed his life; he gave his life to god, and I still to this day... the look in his eye when he woke up, the terror, I'm absolutely convinced he did meet the devil.'

The TikTok video has amassed more than seven million views and thousands of comments.

One user wrote: '23yrs of EMS. You can tell when you get someone back that they have seen something. It is in their eyes.'

Another claimed: 'I died at 23 after I got shot in the head, I met the lord and said it’s not your time yet. After 8 hours of surgery they brought me back to life.'
