A new advert released by political action group Mothers Against Greg Abbott has been widely shared online.
The minute-and-a-half short encapsulates the brutal realities of anti-abortion policies in the US, a country that removed women’s constitutional right to abortion last month.
Targeting Republican Texas governor Greg Abbott, the political ad spotlights what Abbott’s curtailing of abortion rights inflicts on families.
The ad, released by Mothers Against Greg Abbott on Monday (25 July), begins with a doctor entering an examination room to tell an expectant couple that their baby will be born with a ‘catastrophic brain abnormality’ and won’t survive more than a few hours after birth.
Whose choice?— Mothers Against Greg Abbott PAC (@MomsAGAbbott) July 25, 2022
Texas women no longer have a choice to make their most personal decision. This is wrong! Texans need to fight back and vote for Democrats this November and vote against TxGOP. Vote them out!#WhoseChoice #MAGAtheGood #WomensRights #TxLege pic.twitter.com/vHyHMVbBTa
What’s more, the doctor tells them: “If she is to survive, she will live only a matter of hours after birth. During that time, she will experience a multitude of seizures and ultimately aspirate on her own bodily fluids. She will suffer.”
He then adds: “A decision will need to be made on termination. I wish I could tell you what to do.”
Bursting into tears, the mother is then told by the doctor: “There is only one person who can make this choice, and that person is Greg,” prompting the father to ask: “Who the f**k is Greg?”
Walking to the other side of the room, the doctor reveals he has a small locker fixed to his wall stamped with the face of Abbott.
Inside the locker is a red phone, which the doctor uses to ‘call Abbott’ and inform him of the mother’s situation.
After a seconds-long conversation, the doctor hangs up the phone and tells the expectant parents: “Yeah, that’s gonna be a no [to an abortion]. Best of luck to you.”
Sharing the powerful ad on Twitter, Mothers Against Greg Abbott added the caption: “Whose choice? Texas women no longer have a choice to make their most personal decision. This is wrong!
“Texans need to fight back and vote for Democrats this November and vote against TxGOP. Vote them out!”
UNILAD has approached Abbott for comment.
Last month, millions of US women lost the legal right to abortion when the United States Supreme Court overturned the 50-year-old Roe v Wade ruling.
The court ruled in favour of the state by a majority vote of six to three, in turn making it so individual states across North America will now be able to introduce bans on the procedure.
