Local Reporter's Existential 'Worst Month Of The Year' Segment Is Perfect Valentine's Day Viewing

Kevin Killeen goes viral each year for his on-the-nose description of February.

A reporter in St. Louis has gone viral once again for his bleak but on-the-nose description of the month of February.

'February is the worst month of the year', begins KMOX's Kevin Killeen in his local news segment filmed back in 2016. It might prove a controversial opinion to anyone who is currently being showered with flowers and chocolates, but when you think about the month as a whole, he definitely has a point.

While standing on top of a car park in Missouri, surrounded by fog and a background of lifeless buildings, the reporter describes the second month of the year as 'honest' because it 'doesn’t hold up life any better than it really is'.

Check out his segment below:

Killeen claimed the bleak nature of February is evident in 'the way people walk and how they look', before drawing attention to an umbrella which he believed symbolised everything about February.

He commented: 'This says it all. This has a spring-like, or floral pattern on it, but somebody on this February day has abandoned it with its broken shaft like a desperate flinging-off of something that's not true any more.'

The reporter acknowledged there are a few things some people could look forward to in February, for example Valentine's Day and Mardi Gras, but claimed these are merely inventions to 'try to hide the bleakness of February', and noted that the month also contains Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent and acts as a day to reflect on mortality.

In reference to Ash Wednesday, Killeen asked: 'What other month could host a holiday that's designed to remind us that we're all going to die?'

Though the segment is generally miserable, the sheer candour of Killeen's comments was enough to win over viewers. Each February the clip makes a resurgence, offering the perfect content for anyone who scoffs at Valentine's Day and those who are experiencing a bleak February in general.

Responding to the video on Twitter, one person wrote: 'Kevin Killeen gets it. February is terrible.'

Another amused viewer commented: 'Kevin Killeen just made my February. Everyone needs a good laugh during this bleak month.'

In an interview with The Guardian this month, Killeen revealed the now-viral video was actually a 'throwaway piece' he recorded as an experiment, but which now continues to be thrust into the spotlight.

He said: 'At first it’s like someone singing happy birthday to you because everybody loves you. But then if they keep singing happy birthday all weekend and you’re like, stop it already.'

With February continuing to prove itself as the worst month of the year I can't imagine the popularity of Killeen's video will die down any time soon. For both his sake and ours, let's just hope March comes around quickly.
