Johnny Depp's lawyer Ben Chew has explained why he did a fist pump when Amber Heard brought up Kate Moss during her testimony.

Heard made a number of allegations about her ex-husband during the pair's recent defamation trial, and also admitted at one point that she herself had been physically violent with Depp during a fight in 2015.

When recalling the situation to the court, Heard attempted to try and justify her actions by bringing up a rumour which alleged Depp had pushed his former girlfriend Kate Moss down the stairs years earlier; a rumour Chew said he knew 'was not true'.

Hear the lawyer talk about the testimony below:

As cameras were allowed in court during Depp and Heard's trial, members of the public were able to see the moment Chew's mouth dropped open in apparent delight when Heard mentioned Moss's name. He turned around to other members of the legal team and made a fist-pump motion that received a lot of attention online.

Addressing his move in a more recent appearance shared by the Law & Crime Network, Chew explained: "There was an instance in which Miss Heard actually did admit to punching Johnny, and that was what we call the 'staircase incident'.

"But her explanation for that was she had to punch Johnny because she was convinced that but for her punching Johnny, Johnny would have pushed her sister Whitney down the stairs the same way she had heard that he had pushed Kate Moss down the stairs."

Chew admitted he 'lost [his] composure for a moment' and did the fist pump because he knew the claim wasn't true.

During her testimony, Heard said: "I don’t hesitate. I don’t wait. I just, in my head, instantly think of Kate Moss and stairs.”

After the Aquaman star made the claim, Moss herself gave testimony via video in which she dispelled the rumour that Depp had pushed her, saying instead she had fallen down some stairs while on holiday with Depp at the GoldenEye resort in Jamaica.

“We were leaving the room, and Johnny left the room before I did, and there had been a rainstorm. As I left the room, I slid down the stairs and I hurt my back. I screamed because I didn’t know what had happened to me and I was in pain. He came running back to help me and carried me to my room and got me medical attention,” Moss told the court.
