Chip munchers are venting on social media after Doritos UK revealed a major change might be in the pipeline.

When it comes to chips, the fans are loyal - so loyal in fact I got hypnotized to stop eating at least five packets every day in the office.

And there's one chip with a loyal following which has since ruffled a few feathers.

Doritos launched all the way back in 1964 and has since become a snacking staple, but a major shake up could be on the way.

The brand's UK account took to Instagram to share a post yesterday (January 13).

The image shows what appears to be a Dorito chip, but there's one thing which is glaringly obvious about the chip - it has four sides not only three, no longer a triangle but a square/diamond shape.

The image states: "The shape of things to come."

Another image shared online shows a 'size comparison' between the regular triangular-shaped Dorito many of us have grown to know and love alongside the 'square version' - the square chip appearing larger at first glance. But is bigger always better?

Well, the social media post has thrown many into a frenzy, it not taking long for chip munchers to take to the comments to weigh in.

One Instagram user said: "Doritos without a [triangle] it isn't a Doritos!"

"This ain’t April 1st, come on…" another added.

A third commented: "Don’t mess up with my triangle!"

"Noooo, you’ve already ruined them with this new ‘bolder crunch,'" a fourth wrote.

And a fifth speculated: "Mark my words, the shape change will be to take emphasis off of a change in bag size from 180g to 150g but for the same price. Betcha."

A Doritos spokesperson told the Mail Online: "The news isn't ready to be shared quite yet, but great to know how much interest there is in the shape of our chips.

"As you've now seen, square Doritos are something we're exploring and we'll reveal more officially later this month."

And the debate has spilled onto Twitter too.

One user wrote: "Yep, cheaper to make squares and use less ingredients. It's optically larger, but actually less stuff. The rich get richer. Facts check it."

"Well, it won’t be Doritos anymore, it’s just not the same. The square shape feels more like a cracker, lol," a second wrote.

A third commented: "Why? Change for the sake of change. These young marketing people really need to learn value of a brand."

Although, some are very much behind the potential change in design.

One wrote: "This obviously is an effort to make them healthier. I'm absolutely sold on this."

And a final simply resolved: "A square is just two triangles in one."

UNILAD has contacted Doritos for further comment.
