Donald Trump has officially announced his bid to run for US President in 2024.

Trump’s presidential run won’t come as a huge surprise, seeing as he strongly hinted at the move on the eve of this month’s midterms, promising a ‘very big announcement' in the middle of this month.

Speaking to his loyal and faithful supporters, the former leader said: "We've always known this was not the end, it was only the beginning to rescue the American dream.

"In order to make America great and glorious again I am tonight announcing my candidacy for President of the United States."

The announcement sparked cheers and applause from those in the audience.

Trump described the United States as a 'nation in decline', according to ABC News, and he believes he will be the saviour to bring it back to glory.

"This decline is not a fate we must accept," he said.

"When given the choice, boldly, clearly and directly, I believe the American people will overwhelmingly reject the left's platform of national ruin.

"And they will embrace our platform of national greatness and glory to America."

He added: "This is a party that has become much bigger, much stronger, much more powerful [and] can do much more good for our country."

The Guardian also reported that Trump had wanted to capitalise on the Republican party’s expected clean-sweep at the midterms by launching his 2024 campaign off the back of that success and taking credit for the wins.

However, despite strong predictions that a ‘red wave’ would sweep the US and plenty of polls pointing to Democratic losses a’plenty, Joe Biden’s party kept control of the Senate and Republicans actually underperformed.

On 8 November, Trump held an election watch party at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, but the normally talkative former President delivered what The Guardian called ‘a short and solitary speech’, saying it had been an ‘interesting evening’.

Trump's time in office ended in chaos with a mob of supporters attacking the Capitol Building in Washington as they sought to keep him in power.

According to an investigation carried out by the January 6th committee, the attack was part of a seven-part plan by Trump - who also made false claims about fraudulent votes - to overturn the 2020 presidential election result.
