A man has been in a standoff with armed police for three days after he barricaded himself in with his eight-year-old son.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, January 9, police were called to the house in Coventry to conduct a welfare check.
However, the 41-year-old father barricaded himself inside the residence with his son and has been there ever since.
Those in the surrounding area have resultantly been left unable to leave their homes for over 30 hours.
Surrounding streets have also been sealed off by the police and armed force, The Independent reports.
West Midlands Police stated:
A cordon remains in place around a house in Earlsdon Avenue North, Coventry, this morning where a man has been refusing to come out since the early hours of yesterday morning.
The 41-year-old has his eight-year-old son with him and there are some concerns for their safety.
Unfortunately, residents, businesses, a school and travel are severely disrupted by the cordon.
The police added they were ‘sorry for the inconvenience, but our priority is the safety of those involved,’ before urging members of the public to ‘avoid the area where possible’.
It explained that updates would be issued ‘as soon’ as they could.
A local resident noted how ‘surprised’ everyone was that the standoff was ‘into day three,’ BBC reports.
‘I think the general feeling is this has to come to an end. The safety of the child is of paramount importance, but this can’t go on forever, and the police must have some sense of that as well,’ they stated.
Specialist officers currently remain stationed at the scene and Coventry Police Commander Chief Superintendent Pete Henrick explained officers are doing ‘everything [they] can to bring it to a safe conclusion’.
The junctions of Earlsdon Avenue North and Kensington Road/Highland Road, Westwood Road and Newcombe Road are all currently closed.
Near to Earlsdon Community Library, an information centre has been set up for residents affected by closures caused by the incident.
