Sam Smith Identifies As Non-Binary

Sam Smith – singer-songwriter, Academy Award winner, and all-round incredibly talented individual – has revealed in a candid interview they identify as non-binary.

The 26-year-old rose to fame in 2012 with hit song Latch and has been open about their sexuality since coming out to the world nearly five years ago.

And now Sam has spoke openly and honestly in an emotional interview about the ‘war’ which has always been going on within their body and mind, identifying as non-binary.

Speaking to Jameela Jamil for her ‘I Weigh’ movement, the 26-year-old talked about body image and a previous lack of confidence regarding their own body.

Sam then admitted having always had ‘always had a bit of a war within my body’, before saying a sex change had been considered in the past.

The singer-songwriter told Jameela:

I’ve always had a little bit of a war going within my body and my mind. I do think like a woman sometimes, in my head. Sometimes I’ve questioned ‘Do I want a sex change?’

It’s something I still think about, like, ‘Do I want to?’

The 26-year-old went on to say they realised they were non-binary after hearing conversations from others who used the term.

Sam told Jameela:

When I saw the word ‘non-binary’, ‘genderqueer’, and I read into it, and I heard these people speaking I was like, ‘Fuck, that is me’.

You are just you. You are a mixture of all different things. You’re your own special creation. That’s how I take it…

I’m not male or female, I think I float somewhere in between. It’s all on a spectrum. I think the same with sexuality.

Sam added that, having once resented the fact their body moved in a ‘feminine’ way, they have now learned to love themself, asking: ‘how dare I not like my body?’

After posting the emotional interview to Instagram, Sam said the interview allowed a conversation to talk openly about their body and so ‘completely changed’ their life.

The singer wrote:

I know this sounds dramatic but this interview completely changed my life. Being able to talk so openly about my body issues and feeling so safe whilst doing it was truly liberating.

I am so thankful to Jameela and her team for this opportunity and being so respectful and kind to me. It took a lot for me to do this and I was so nervous, so please be kind.

I really hope this can make someone else who feels like me, a little less lonely and a little less alien xx

As a hugely iconic role-model for so many, I think Sam will be able to reach a lot of people with these words and will help fans learn to love themselves for who they are.
