Our new Lara Croft, Alicia Vikander, has revealed a few new details on the upcoming Tomb Raider cinematic reboot.

Most importantly, the new film will be based on Crystal Dynamic’s excellent but divisive 2013 videogame reboot of the franchise, as many of us suspected.

Vikander told HitFix:

They told me they were doing the film based on the reboot of the game from 2013. That is more of an origin story. You get into an emotional aspect of getting to know Lara hopefully in an in-depth way. So I hope that doing a film of the rebooted game will bring something new and fresh that’ll stand on its own two legs.

Tomb Raider director Roar Uthaug (also behind brilliant disaster movie The Wave) said back in March that his film would echo the 2013 game, in that it will attempt to make Lara feel like a ‘human being’.

Vikander also mentioned the impact that the original games had on her as a kid, saying she was ‘excited’ to see a female protagonist in a videogame.

Back in June, Vikander told Total Film that she was a big fan of the games, often sneaking play sessions against her parents wishes.

It can only be a good sign that the new Lara Croft loves the games – plus, she previously bagged an Oscar for best supporting role in The Danish Girl, so that can’t hurt the new film’s chances either.

Finally, the actress also revealed in the HitFix interview that she turned down a role in another upcoming videogame movie.

Vikander apparently missed out on the chance to appear in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed, due in part to scheduling concerns for Jason Bourne.

The new Tomb Raider movie hits cinemas on March 16, 2018, while Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration comes to PlayStation 4 in October.
