Blaming impromptu crying sessions on chopping onions could be a thing of the past, thanks to a new product called ‘Sunions’.
The product is a result of more than 30 years of breeding to find a variety that will not make the chopper cry, like normal onions do.
Unlike its common counterparts, Sunions do not release as much of an irritant called propyl sulfoxide.
When this chemical – which is most potent at room temperature – is mixed with moisture in the air, it changes into sulfuric acid and irritates the eye. In order to get rid of the allergen, you’ll start to cry.
The natural chemical is actually how the vegetables defend themselves against any creatures who might try to eat them.
Whatever conspiracy theorists may think, Sunions are not a genetically-modified product and were grown through an all-natural cross-breeding program.
According to the Sunions website:
Unlike all other onions, Sunions become sweeter every day. Volatile compounds in onions are responsible for tearing and pungent flavor and the amounts of those compounds in other onions remain the same or increase over time.
‘In Sunions, these compounds do the exact opposite and decrease to create a tearless, sweet and mild onion,’ it added.
Sunions are currently grown only in Nevada and Washington in the US, and availability for the vegetable begins in mid-December and can continue until March or April, depending on supply.
Paul Bidwell, an onion buyer for Waitrose, told FEMAIL, ‘We understand how a-peeling tearless onions are to our customers which is why we’re delighted to launch Sunions in selected stores and via Waitrose.com.’
He added that the Sunion ‘lends itself perfectly to a variety of dishes, from salads to hot’.
The sweet onion was actually launched in the US four years ago, however, reviews of the vegetable have not been overly favourable.
One report by the Washington Post in 2018 said they were very sweet but barely had any scent, while another said they were ‘almost flavourless’.
Sunions will go on sale at select Waitrose stores on January 18, 2022.
