Will Smith lost his temper with Chris Rock after he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith.

Smith is the favourite to take home Best Actor at tonight's Academy Awards for his performance in King Richard.

Ahead of his category, Rock took to the stage to present the Best Documentary award. Naturally, as a comedian, he took a few jabs at the audience – including Jada, and ended up on the wrong side of the Men in Black star.

Watch the moment Will smacked Rock below:

It all went wrong when Rock made a 'G.I. Jane 2' joke about Jada. "Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see you." At first, Will appeared to laugh it off while Jada rolled her eyes, but he then walked onto the stage and smacked the comedian.

Rock seemed surprised, but kept up the laughs, saying how Will just 'smacked the sh*t' out of him. Many at home thought this was part of some skit for the show, but it quickly became apparent this wasn't the case.

"Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth,” Smith shouted, to which Rock replied: “Wow... dude. It was a G.I. Jane joke."

"Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth," Smith shouted again. Rock then assured Smith he would, before saying: "That was the greatest night in the history of television."

It's unclear if the pair have spoken since the on-stage altercation. Naturally, it's set social media on fire.

One user wrote: "Will Smith just punched Chris Rock live at the #Oscars in an unscripted moment for the ages."

Another wrote: "Will Smith decking Chris Rock at the Oscars has to be one of the wildest things I’ve ever seen in my life."

A third wrote: "The Oscars planned all these terrible segments to get ratings, and the most talked about thing is going to be Will Smith punching Chris Rock."

Following the altercation, Smith went on to win Best Actor – his first-ever Academy Award. However, he didn't issue an apology to Rock, specifically.

"I want to apologise to the Academy. I want to apologise to all my fellow nominees," he said.

"Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said. I look like the crazy father just like they said about Richard Williams but love will make you do crazy things."
