Saw X director says Jigsaw is actually the ‘hero’ of the movie in unexpected twist

He's a serial killer who puts people into punishing deathtraps - but apparently he's going to be the hero this time

The Saw franchise recently announced a new instalment and the big news for Saw X was that Tobin Bell would be returning as Jigsaw.

You might be wondering how that is possible since we're on movie 10 in the horror franchise and he died in the third one, though he did make plenty of other appearances in the sequels.

This is going to be Saw movie number 10, and Bell has starred in eight of the previous nine movies, absent only for 2019's Spiral, but the main thing is that Jigsaw is going to be a major player in the film instead of seen only in flashbacks.

With the trailer promising us more traps and more gore, we're getting a movie that slots between the first and second Saw movies in the timeline to give us a story where Jigsaw is free and running his deadly games.

While a guy who puts people into deathtraps that require the victim to subject themselves to horrendous amounts of pain in order to escape would be a bad guy, the twist of Saw X is that for once Jigsaw is actually going to be the 'hero'.

Saw X's director says Jigsaw is the hero of the movie.

We're not talking the Saw franchise's usual 'now I've made you stick your arm in a blender you'll appreciate your life more' motivation for why Jigsaw does what he does.

According to Saw X director Kevin Greutert there'll be much more focus on Jigsaw as a character and he'll be as close to being a good guy as the inventor of the reverse bear trap is ever going to get.

According to The Direct, during a panel at Midsummer Scream Convention the director said the movie would be set in Mexico and that Jigsaw was 'absolutely the protagonist of this movie'.

Director Kevin Greutert said: "John is absolutely... the protagonist in this movie. He is a man who's ill. He's a guy who was looking to extend his life.

"And in this process of him thinking, he's getting his life extended, s**t goes down. There it is, but he's absolutely the hero of this movie."

"What do you mean the movie's good guy put me in this?"
Lionsgate

"He's in this movie… [I haven't] done the math, but probably [more than] the last six or seven movies combined."

"This is his movie... This is John Kramer's story as a human, not as Jigsaw, we'll get there, trust me, but as a human, and like, you know, his fears and what's going on in his life at the time."

So there you have it, ladies and gentlemen, our hero of the movie will be the serial killer (though he'd contest the notion that he directly killed anyone) horror icon Jigsaw.

With that in mind, his victims must be really messed up people, and the trailer makes it seem as though they tricked Jigsaw into thinking they cured his cancer when they didn't.

Saw X releases in cinemas on 29 September in the US, and 27 October in the UK.
