Fans of 'Oscar-worthy' Netflix horror say it's 'by far' one of the 'best movies' to have been created in recent years

The hit show is loosely inspired by 'Operation Flagship', a 1985 sting which saw police lure and arrest more than 100 criminals

Fans are raving over a Netflix horror which some viewers believe is 'Oscar-worthy' and 'one of the best movies' created in recent years.

The hit show is loosely based on a true story - on the grounds that the plot was inspired by actual events, although the main characters in it are not.

The film, which is about an hour and 45 minutes, follows a father-and-daughter-duo who attend a pop concert, but unbeknownst to them, it has been targeted by the FBI in an attempt to ensnare a serial killer.

It is written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, who cast his daughter Saleka Shyamalan as pop star 'Lady Raven' whose gig gets crashed, but the two-time Academy Awards nominee based the show on something he had heard of when he was younger.

That was 'Operation Flagship', a 1985 sting which saw the police in Washington lure and arrest more than 100 criminals to a fake TV station as they believed they had won free NFL tickets.

Speaking to the BBC last year, the 54-year-old explained: "I heard about it when I was a kid and I thought it was totally absurdist, that this actually happened.

"It was something that was in my head a lot when it happened... This was real-life criminals, FBI and police. They dressed up as cheerleaders and mascots and were dancing around with them and goofing around with them."

He addded: "Probably today they couldn't do anything like this, but back in those days they were literally partying with them.

"They were like 'come on in the room!' and then checked their names and made sure it was the right people, and got around them and said 'you're all under arrest'."

The film, which came out in 2024, is called Trap, and audiences have been heaping praise on it online.

Taking to Twitter, users raved about the show: "I just watched the movie Trap on Netflix and by far this has to be one of the best movies I’ve seen in a few years."

While a second added: "Oscar winning performances honestly...."

With a third lauding it an outrageous score, writing: "Did anybody watch TRAP on Netflix!? 1000000/10."

However, critics on IMDb didn't rate the Indian-born show as fondly - giving it just a 5.8 out of 10. But that didn't stop one Twitter user to laud it as 'underrated', more specifically highlighting Josh Hartnett’s performance as lead character Cooper.

"Josh Hartnett’s performance in Trap is one of the most underrated of 2024 and deserved far more recognition," they penned.
