Gaspard Ulliel Dies Aged 37 In Skiing AccidentAlamy/APL Archive

French actor Gaspard Ulliel has passed away at the age of 37 following a serious skiing accident. 

The actor, who stars in Marvel’s upcoming Moon Knight series, experienced a head injury in a collision on the slopes in the Savoie region this week.

He was transported by helicopter to hospital on Tuesday, January 18, but did not survive. His death was confirmed by his family and local agent today, and an investigation into what happened is currently underway.

Ulliel is known for films including Hannibal Rising, Saint Laurent, It’s Only The End Of The World and A Very Long Engagement, as well as being recognisable as the face of the Chanel fragrance Bleu de Chanel.

In 2004, the actor was awarded the title of Most Promising Actor at the César Awards for his work alongside Marion Cotillard, Audrey Tatou and Jodie Foster in A Very Long Engagement. Thirteen years later he won the César for Best Actor for It’s Only the End of the World.

More recently he acted as Anton Mogart or Midnight Man in the Moon Knight series, which also stars Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke and is set to be released this year.

Fans of Ulliel have been sharing tributes on social media following the news of his death, with one Twitter user saying the actor was ‘great in everything [they] saw him in.’

They added: ‘my favorite performance of his will always be in xavier dolan’s it’s only the end of the world. gone to soon, rip.’

Another fan wrote: ‘This is so devastating, I can’t believe this.‘It’s Only the End of the World’ is one of my favorite movies, largely due to Gaspard Ulliel’s heartbreaking performance. RIP.’

Movie blog Film School Rejects wrote: ‘We are heartbroken to learn that actor Gaspard Ulliel has died following a skiing accident. We are big fans of his extraordinary performances in films like ‘Saint Laurent‘ and ‘It’s Only the End of the World’ and look forward to seeing his work in Marvel’s ‘Moon Knight.’ RIP.’

Hard snow and ice in the Savoie region has prompted an increase in police responses recently, with the mountain police service serving the site of the accident saying it has been organising as many as five or six rescues per day.

Ulliel is survived by his partner, model-singer Gaëlle Piétri, and his five-year-old daughter.
