Matthew Perry says he woke up covered in his own poo 50 to 60 times after his colon exploded

The actor opened up about suffering from an almost fatal opioid overdose in 2018.

Matthew Perry has revealed that he woke up covered in faecal matter 50 to 60 times after his colon exploded.

While it’s no secret the actor has struggled with drug addiction, Perry got candid in a recent GQ interview about reaching an all-time low after an almost fatal opioid overdose in 2018.

Perry recalls how he was raced to the hospital while experiencing ‘excruciating pain’ during a rehab stint.

It turns out the Friends actor’s colon exploded, which led him to spend two weeks in a coma, with his family being notified that he had a two per cent chance of survival.

Following his coma, Perry was required to wear a colostomy bag, which was first fitted while he was in and out conscious.

He told the outlet: “I would wake up. The bag would have broken again and I had s**t all over my face, all over my body, in the bed next door. When it breaks, it breaks. You have to get nurses.”

The Friends star said this wasn't an isolated incident.

"When I say that I woke up covered in my own s**t, I'm talking 50 to 60 times," he revealed.

After nine long months, Perry was finally pencilled in to have the colostomy bag removed.

However, the first attempt didn’t work, and the 53-year-old was made to wear an ileostomy bag, which he describes ‘10 times worse’.

He added: “You have to deal with an ileostomy bag 18, 19 times a day. A lot of suicides with an ileostomy bag. People can’t take it.”

However, thankfully, his second surgery was a success.

“I’ve lived without it now for a long time and I’m very grateful,” he said.

In his new memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, the actor notes how he spent half of his life in and out of treatment facilities.

He also estimated he’s spent around USD $9 million (AUD $13.87m or £7.77m), ‘trying to get sober’, as per The New York Times.

The actor told the outlet that his drug addiction was at its worse while he was at the pinnacle of his career as he was ingesting '55 Vicodin a day'.

After filming Chandler and Monica's wedding scenes on the popular sitcom, Perry revealed a truck helmed by his sponsor came to pick him up and drive him to a rehab facility.

And after endless trips to treatment facilities and 14 surgeries, the actor is now 18 months sober.

Way to go Mr. Bring!
